Woman accused of stealing overnight companion’s cell phone
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A woman accused of stealing a cell phone from a man she spent the night with will return to court in late June for trial on simple larceny.
It is alleged that the accused, Horasha Green, had spent the night with the man before he discovered his cell phone and other items missing when he arose from sleep.
The prosecution further alleged that Green admitted to taking the items when asked and arranged to give them back to the complainant at an agreed location. When that did not happen, the complainant reported the matter to the police.
According to the prosecution, the phone and another item were subsequently returned at the police station, with the accused admitting to taking them under caution.
However, when she appeared in the Half Way Tree parish court on Tuesday, the woman maintained her innocence.
The accused indicated in court that the phone had been given to her as a gift, adding that she had not taken anything else.
When offered the course of mediation, the complainant said: “No mediation because it never have to reach so far.”
Sitting judge Peter Wilson repeatedly asked him if he wanted the woman to go to prison, to which the complainant firmly responded, “No mediation,” alleging in court that she took his cell phone with his United States banking information on purpose.
The woman repeatedly maintained her innocence.
The judge ordered that she have no contact with the complainant, that her fingerprints be taken and extended her bail with reporting conditions.
Trial is set for June 22.
