Dear Editor,

Despite the inherent sadness that typifies the funeral rites of a lost friend or a popular person, there are some positives that emerge most times. John had a beautiful and deserving memorial service at the University Chapel last Monday.

Among the many dignitaries I saw in the newspapers was my hero, Peter Abrahams. I also saw Minister Grange with John’s wife, Marjan de Bruin-Maxwell. This was a very civilised and heartening moment. It smacks of the cricket periods when I was fanatically drawn to the game, and would be depressed if bowlers like Keith Miller should wreck a West Indies batting innings, but it did not minimise my respect for his bowling skills. Bravo Minister Grange, for together we stand, divided we fall. We are Jamaicans first and foremost.

It is ironic that under two years ago when a group of friends and families from both sides of the aisle went to Beaches Negril from New York and Florida for our son’s wedding, I chose the venue mainly because my friend John was a columnist at the Observer. It is said that referrals come in various forms.

May John’s soul rest in peace.
