NCB scholars give back
RECIPIENTS of NCB Foundation scholarships recently got together to lead a massive painting project at St Anne’s Primary School in Denham Town.
They were joined by NCB staff members, teachers, students, parents, and community members as they sought to transform the school.
“The project, which represents the foundation’s mandate of creating change in the communities in which we serve, included the painting of the grades four and five classrooms, and giving the school’s only recreational area a face lift for the upcoming school term,” said a release from the foundation.
St Anne’s Primary, which serves not only Denham Town, but also Hannah Town and Tivoli Gardens, was chosen in an effort to give back, at Christmas, to a community that has faced many challenges.
“It is great to see our scholarship recipients giving back and helping to touch lives in a similar way in which their lives have been touched. It is the spirit of volunteerism that we seek to encourage in our youth; and the overwhelming participation of all stakeholders is indicative of the commitment to serve,” said Andrew Pairman, director of the NCB Foundation.
Members of the school community, meanwhile, have expressed their gratitude for the effort.
“I am elated that my class was one of the rooms that were repainted and I know the students will be happy about it when they return to school in the New Year,” said one grade four teacher.
The scholarship recipients, for their part, were happy to deliver.
“This project was not an obligation, but an opportunity given to make a difference in someone else’s life,” said Chevel Burke, All Island Champion Girl for 2010, speaking on behalf of the scholarship recipients.
