Tenant: Landlord made my life ‘a living hell’
A landlord who was accused of throwing human waste into his tenant’s room because she rejected his sexual advances was last week slapped with a three-month suspended sentence when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.
Forty-three-year-old Chester Myers from a Seaview Gardens address in Kingston was remanded in custody when he appeared in court on charges of breaching the Rent Restriction Act and malicious destruction of property.
The court was told that Myers turned off the electricity on the premises that he rented to the complainant and littered her floor with human waste in an effort to force her off his property.
Myers had admitted to the court that he did cut off the electricity because the complainant did not want to pay him the rent, but denied that he had thrown human waste into her room.
However, the investigating officer told the court that he saw the human waste in the tenant’s room.
The complainant, for her part, told the court that she paid the rent but alleged that Myers wanted her to leave because she was not interested in him sexually.
“Your Honour, I pay my rent but he wanted something more than rent, he wanted to have a sexual relationship with me and because I told him no, he told me to move out and throw filth in my room,” the complainant had told the court on a previous appearance.
The complainant had also informed the court that Myers was making her life “a living hell”.
Last week, when she showed up at court for Myers to be sentenced, she again complained to the court that Myers was spreading malicious rumours about her, saying that she was a lesbian and that she was nasty.
“Your Honour, him making it bad for me to get another room,” she said.
Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey then scolded Myers for his behaviour. “You must not do those things, you are a disgrace,” said Pusey.
She then gave him a three-month sentence, which was suspended for a year.
“Keep your beak together, because if you open your mouth against her again, you are going to spend that three months in prison,” Pusey warned Myers.
