Dear Editor,

The year 2010 was a difficult and challenging one for us as a people, both on the national and individual levels. The international financial meltdown has had its spinoff on our lives. We saw layoffs, reductions in income and increases in expenditure. We experienced tremendous turbulence in the political and government spheres. The social realities have continued to decline, except for the hope brought about by a reduction in the murder rate.

Yet, there is so much to be thankful for, amidst the various crises we faced. There are tremendous opportunities arising out of the crises that must be seized and maximised as we look ahead.

The crises have shown that change is possible and have given the chance to make the necessary changes, if the strength of will is present in our leaders and people.

I would like to suggest a few priorities for special focus in 2011.

1 Tackle garrisonisation. The Tivoli Gardens insurgence (although poorly handled) has begun a process, demonstrating that we can address garrisonisation. This process should continue in all garrison communities, with a clear plan that should be part of an overall National Social Development Agenda.

2 Restore justice in our society. We must therefore commit to fight injustice and corruption, in all forms, at all levels.

3 Jobs and wealth creation opportunities for the masses. This should form the base of the thought processes regarding our economic development focus. Education for productivity, empowerment of youth and small business sector development need pride of place in this area.

4 Greater church and civil society action. The church should lend its full support to the areas mentioned above and in addition, lead the charge for moral and social transformation, requiring and facilitating the Fresh Start approach in all areas of national life. The principle of forgiveness and restoration of trust must be applied as the foundation for solid advancement.

We should all as citizens recommit ourselves to the secure base of love of God and love of neighbour, on which to build a strong nation.
