Bail claimant threatens to sue judge with suit
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A man who has been in police custody for several months and who is awaiting psychiatric evaluation has threatened a lawsuit against acting senior Resident Magistrate Vivienne Harris for his prolonged incarceration.
On Tuesday, Leslie Miller calmly but loudly told the St James Resident Magistrate judge he was minded to take out a lawsuit against her for holding him when he should be free.
Miller, who is being held on a number of charges including malicious destruction of property has been clamouring for bail since late last year.
He told the court Tuesday that he had 27 houses and on a previous occasion he reported that one of his homes cost “trillions of US dollars”.
Miller has been behind bars at the Freeport lock-up as his mother, his only known relative, refuses to take him into her home.
The accused man is one of several inmates waiting to be seen by the government psychiatrist.
Miller told the court on Tuesday that his wife and children were waiting for him to return home, but when asked to give the name and a telephone number for his wife, he refused, saying he did not want to give out her name in public. He offered instead to tell the judge in chambers.
At one stage, on overhearing giggles from several persons in the court, he asked: “Am I the laughing stock of this court?”
