2 new faces in Sunshine Girls squad
TWO new players have been included in Jamaica’s 12-member netball squad to face world champions Australia in the Supreme Ventures Sunshine Series at the National Indoor Sports Centre (NISC).
For the games scheduled on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, shooter Marsha Murphy and defender Kamieka Sherwood will join the remainder of the squad which is made up of a number of experienced players.
Veteran goal attack Simone Forbes will captain the squad and she will be joined by shooters Romelda Aiken, Jhaniele Fowler and Anna Kay Griffiths.
Vice-captain Nadine Bryan will lead the centre court line-up and to be joined by Sasher Gaye Henry, Paula Thompson, Kimone Tulloch and Vanessa Walker, while the defending third will be marshalled by Nicole Aiken, Althea Byfield, Kasey Evering and Malysha Kelly.
“It’s going to be very challenging, but I think we will certainly give a good account of ourselves,” team captain Simone Forbes told the Observer.
The Sunshine Girls, who are using the series as part of their preparations for this July’s World Netball Championships in Singapore, will move in their team house, dubbed “The Sunshine Chalet” this morning.
The house was finally finished after nearly one year and opened for the players to move in last weekend.
“I think it’s good that we have somewhere we can go,” Forbes stated.
“It’s more of a personal setting. It’s a house. You’re not closed away in any room and so we’ll have interaction which is good; Bonding with your team-mates on and off the court which is good and an absolute necessity for a team to do well.”
Members of the Australia Netball squad were due to arrive in the island late last evening ahead of the series.
