H’View tame ‘Lion’ at Compound
Harbour View moved up to fourth place in the Digicel Premier League standings on Sunday after scoring a 2-0 win over Humble Lion at Harbour View mini-stadium, to start the third round with three points.
Senior team debutant Elton Thompson gave the home team the lead eight minutes into the game and Marcelino Blackburn settled the match from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute.
Humble Lion were reduced to 10 men, as Ricardo Campbell picked up his second yellow card for his challenge of Rafiek Thomas that led to the penalty.
Harbour View’s coach Donovan Hayles said it was good to get the round off to a winning start. “This round is going to be the telling round, because if you really don’t command this round you are not going to be in with a chance to win the premier league.
“And we try to use this game to give us the start on a long journey ahead of us,” he said.
The home team were the better side for the first half and had three great chances, of which they took one.
It took just five minutes for Harbour View to open the Lion’s defence, when Jermaine Hue’s precise ball found Christopher Harvey at the back post, but Shawn Sawyers produced a brilliant save to keep the game goalless.
However, two minutes later Harbour View got off the mark, with Harvey providing the cross this time for Thompson, who nodded past former national goalkeeper Sawyers.
Harbour View continued to look the more threatening of the teams, and in the 27th minute Thompson spurned a good opportunity to add to his tally when he directed Hue’s cross wide of the target with Sawyers out of position.
Humble Lion came out more positive after the break and pushed the hosts on the defensive for the first 15 minutes.
Former Harbour View front man Denzil Watson should have pulled a goal back for the Humble Lion in the 57th minute, but he could not generate enough power on his shot to trouble Michaud Barrett from eight yards.
A minute later, Hue sent Thomas through on goal but he hesitated, allowing Sawyers to block his effort.
Omando McLeod then got another rare chance for the visitors on 65 minutes, but he fired high over the bar with Barrett at his mercy.
However, seven minutes later, Harbour View were awarded a penalty by referee Kevin Thomas when Campbell was penalised for his tackle on Thomas.
The defender also picked up his second booking of the match for the challenge, leaving his side a man short to finish the contest.
Blackburn then converted the resulting kick to put the game out of the reach of their opponents.
Humble Lion’s coach Lenworth Hyde said his team was not sharp in front of goal.
“We had most possession in the game, but in front of the goal we were not accurate and we did not create enough chances,” he said. “This set us back a bit, but we still have time,” he added.
