UTech Knights are champions
UNIVERSITY of Technology (UTech) Knights registered a Duckworth & Lewis calculated 16-run victory over GC Foster College to retain their hold on the annual UTech Cricket Classic yesterday at the institution’s Old Hope Road base.
Batting first on a pitch conducive to strokemaking, the UTech Knights racked up a challenging 161 for nine off 20 overs.
Former national youth player, John Ross Campbell fired at the top of the innings 56 from 37 balls, laced with six fours and two sixes. His Man of the Match performance was well supported by Brian Latore with 26 from 24 balls.
Bowling for GC Foster, Daneon Parchment took three wickets for 38 runs off his allotted four overs, while Derval Green took two for 21.
Chasing 162 in their quest to dethrone the reigning champions, the St Catherine-based institution were given a rollicking start by opener Wayne Morgan, who cracked five fours and a six in 31 off 21 balls. After his dismissal, the GC Foster top-order lost some momentum until Derval Green opened his shoulders to blast four boundaries and two sixes in 42 off 25 balls.
Kino Paul Sailsman chipped in with an unbeaten 22 before the torrential rain that had threatened all afternoon brought to an end proceedings with GC Foster on 131 for the loss of eight wickets with 11 balls still to be bowled.
At that time the Duckwort & Lewis par score was 147 for eight, which meant UTech had come out the deserved winners of the title after strong showings in previous matches.
Also competing in the tournament, were the University of the West Indies (UWI) Pelicans and the team from Mico Teachers’ College.
Brian Clarke of UTech was top runscorer with 120 runs in the preliminary round, while spinner Christie Jones topped the bowling at the same stage with eight wickets.
