Murder accused to get legal aid
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A Trelawny man who was charged in the January 5 murder of a Montego Bay businessman was denied bail when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court recently.
The accused, 24-year-old Marvin Gallimore of a Jackson Town address, appeared confused when questioned by the clerk and the resident magistrate.
He told the court that he had no means by which to retain a lawyer and that there were no relatives or friends present at court for him.
Senior Resident Magistrate Vivienne Harris ordered that a legal aid assignment be made and be in place by the time he returns to court on February 9.
Gallimore is alleged to have robbed the deceased, Derrick Service, then hit him in the head with a piece of board.
The allegations are that Service was in the process of handing money to his brother on Barnett Street when Gallimore grabbed it and ran.
He was chased along Gravel Lane when he picked the board, hitting Service. In court, Gallimore admitted under caution to hitting Service but said it was done in self-defence, saying the deceased had hit and kicked at him.
The court heard that a policeman saw what was ensuing and accosted Gallimore.
Service was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
