Munro pip KC for U-16 schoolboy hockey crown

JASON McPherson scored in the ninth minute for Munro College who stunned favourites Kingston College 1-0 on Friday to clinch the Under-16 schoolboy hockey title at Mona.

It was Munro’s second Under-16 title in three years as KC struggled to find the form that saw them boasting a record of 21 goals for and one against from seven matches.

Munro coach Fitzroy Rowe said he reviewed the games KC played, thus enabling him to plan counter strategies.

“The quality was lacking, so we knew we came in as underdogs and the objective was to put the game beyond them as early as possible,” Rowe explained.

Munro captain Levar Dunchie, the MVP of the final, proved a handful for KC, who failed to effectively contain the free-flowing game that the St Elizabeth-based team relished.

KC’s Leon Kerr, the top goalscorer with 11 goals, was affected by his asthma while on the field of play, which blunted the North Street-based school’s goalscoring opportunities.

KC coach Rudolpho Johnston gave the champions their due.

“Munro is a habitual finalists… and we conceded an early goal, and that was the only reason why the game ended this way,” he pointed out.

Earlier, Under-16 schoolgirl champions St Andrew High beat Mona High 1-0 in the semi-final, courtesy of their leading goalscorer Tennessia Jackson, who hit home in the 23rd minute for her fourth goal of the season.

St Andrew High will play Alpha Academy in the final on Monday at 4:00 pm, after Mona High meet Immaculate Conception High at 3:00 pm in the third-place play-off.

Jonte Johnson scored in the 34th minute for Jamaica College to beat Tivoli Gardens High 1-0 in the third-place play-off yesterday.
