UWI management meets with employees over salary issues
KINGSTON, Jamaica — After demonstrations at the campus gates on Monday and again on Wednesday, the management of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona have met with employees to address their concerns.
Following the discussions, staff representatives have agreed that the administration should be given a reasonable timeframe to continue its engagement with the Government of Jamaica and to finalise negotiations with all unions.
In a statement released on Wednesday, UWI acknowledged the protests and explained that the meeting was arranged by the campus’s executive management under the direction of Principal Professor Densil Williams, who was travelling on university business.
The meeting was led by Acting Deputy Principal Professor Marvin Reid. During the session, staff representatives expressed concerns about insufficient communication from their union regarding the status of the comprehensive salary review.
UWI representatives said the team used the opportunity to explain in detail the entire process of the review, including where the university is in the process, and the level of engagement with the unions.
Management also reassured staff of its willingness to maintain open dialogue while respecting the collective bargaining process, which remains central to union negotiations.
In addition to agreeing on a timeline, staff representatives committed to meeting with the wider employee body to further explain the process, the university said.
