Rivoli, Cavalier in DPL play-off clash
RIVOLI and Cavalier will meet in the feature match as the second round of the Premier League play-off series takes place this afternoon at the Prison Oval.
In the other game, Seba United will host Highgate at Jarrett Park. Both games start at 3:30 pm.
After both first-round matches ended in draws, the teams will be seeking to gain the crucial advantage entering Sunday’s final round of first-round games.
Both Seba and Rivoli took a point away from home last Sunday and will be hoping to make the most of home advantage today, although Rivoli coach Calvert Fitzgerald admits their opening match was a very difficult one and he believes they showed the desire and character neccesary to return to the top flight.
“The first match was a very difficult one in St Mary as the pitch was extremely small and we didn’t have a fair amount of space to play any football…,” he said.
“It was 22 players on a small patch of land and the wet grass didn’t do us any favours either, so we’re thankful we escaped with a point,” he pointed out.
“Because we couldn’t get to play our game we had to dig in and fight and it showed that the players are focused on getting back to the Premier League,” he explained.
“All four teams in the competition are tough… although I’m confident in my team and I back them to get these three points…,” he added.
Player/coach for Cavalier, David Laylor, said his team had the game in their hands up to the final minute against Seba, but a lapse in concentration cost them three points.
Although many argue that Cavalier are still match rusty after their competition finished over two months ago, while the other three tournaments were just completed over the past two weeks, Laylor does not believe this is so.
“The lay-off gave us a good amount of time to recover from injuries, and it also gave us time to prepare for the play-offs… I won’t put it down as the reason… we only got one point on Sunday,” he said.
However, he said they can get three points today if they start positively and maintain their momentum throughout the game.
“It’s just for us to come out running… but we have to maintain our focus and the discipline and we’ll come through,” he said.
In the game at Jarrett Park, hosts Seba will start favourites over Highgate. And although Peruvian coach Danillo Barriga knows nothing much about the opposition, he expects a victory.
“This team (Highgate) will come to Montego Bay and check out what Seba has to offer, but in reality I don’t have any idea of their coach. But Seba will continue to play normal while looking for three point,” he said.
He said the game against Cavalier gave them a great boost and with the confidence of the team now high, he is looking for nothing less than three points.
“The game to Cavalier was a big result… and for my players the psychology is much better… right now Seba is practising good football and we hope we can win this,” he said.
Despite playing away, his counterpart Calvin Lewis said their aim is to come away with three points against their more illustrious opponents.
“We did our homwork on the Seba team and we know that we’re more than capable of beating Seba at Seba. We just need to stick to our game plan and I sure we’ll get three points when we go there,” Lewis remarked.
