N’Head, XLCR battle for Primary supremacy
DEFENDING champions Naggo Head, with a combined score of 22 points after two finals, have taken the early lead in the four-day INSPORTS/SWIZZZLE Primary Athletic Championships at the National Stadium yesterday.
Excelsior occupy second place with 17 points, followed by Angels six, Greater Portmore five, New Providence five, Spanish Town four, Rousseau four, St Patrick’s three, Harbour View three, Ensom City two, Lawrence Tavern two and Mountain View, one.
The boys long jump Open final saw Excelsior’s Ahmed Ajagunna (5.0 metres) and teammate Maliek Howell (4.69) taking a one-two, with Anthoneil Johnson of Naggo Head (4.65) third.
Kalcian Andrade of Naggo Head took the girls high jump Open with 1.35 metres, with teammate Brittany Roberts (1.30) and Chris-Ann Pellington of Angels (1.30) copping the other medals.
Two finals are slated for today — the girls and boys long jump Open. The other events scheduled are the 200m preliminaries for Class 1 and 2 boys and girls; 150m Class 3 boys and girls; 400m semi-finals Class 1 boys and girls; 300m semi-finals Class 2 boys and girls; 800m Open semis, boys and girls; 150m semi-finals Class 3 boys and girls and the 200m Class 1 and 2 boys and girls.
Yesterday saw a number of exciting finishes, especially in the heats of the 100 metres, where the semi-finals were in progress at press time.
There were some outstanding runs from schools such as New Providence, Spanish Town, Lawrence Tavern, Ewarton, Angels, Southborough and St John’s, as they pushed themselves towards securing a place in the finals.
Lusean Byfield of Angels, who has the fastest time in the Class 1 boys, enters the semi-finals with 12.57 seconds, followed by Janoi Jiessey of Lawrence Tavern, 12.71, and Ackeem McLean of Seaview, 12.82.
Tiandra Robinson of Portsmouth with 13.37 leads the Class 1 girls 100. Shakira Stewart of Portsmouth, 13.53, and Jynell Graham of North Street, 13.60, are also in.
