Muschett bag basketball bounty
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Muschett High became the first western school to win a national high school basketball competition on Saturday when they took the ISSA/KFC all-island title at a rally held at Manchester High.
Led by MVP Loretta Gordon, Muschett High, out of Wakefield, Trelawny, improved on last year’s runner-up spot by beating Vauxhall 39-23 in the finals, their second win over the Kingston zone runners-up on the day.
Muschett had beaten Herbert Morrison Technical 98-10 on Tuesday to win the Western Conference title for the fourth straight year to qualify for the national play-offs.
In the first round of the national play-offs that was played in two zones, Muschett beat STETHS and then Vauxhall in double overtime to advance to the semi-finals.
In the second round, Muschett dispatched Glenmuir High, 37-8, with Stacian Facey scoring eight points and Deszan McLaren seven points.
In the final, Facey scored 13 points and Gordon scored 12 points to lead Muschett to their big 16 points win and the title.
