Haldane, Wilsons flourish at Badminton Classic
MIKAYLIA Haldane; the Wilson brothers Sean and Shane; and Gerald Isaacs thrived at the three-day Sports Development Foundation/LIME Junior Badminton Classic which ended Monday night at the Constant Spring Racquets Club.
Two hundred and seventy-six players entered the competition, the last one ahead of the Pan American Junior Badminton Championships which will be held here in Jamaica from July 24-31.
In the Girls Under-19, Haldane defeated Sue-Ann Berry, 21-12, 21-8, and partnered with Isaacs to take the Mixed Doubles, 21-11, 16-21, 21-11. However Haldane, the current National Under-19 champion, despite aggravating a nagging knee, teamed up with D’Anna Marie Edwards to clinch the Girls Doubles, 14-21, 21-16, 21-14.
“I am playing at a reasonable standard… but I think I need to work on my singles game for the Pan Am Junior Championships,” she said. “It is improving with the running and drilling that we are doing in Mandeville. I just need more consistency and accuracy,” added the Mandeville High student.
Isaacs won the Under-19 Singles beating Jonathon Smith, 21-7, 21-8, in the final, after dethroning top seed Anthony McNee, 21-19, 21-14, in the semi-final. The DeCarteret College student, who also won the mixed doubles with Haldane, was however runner-up in the Boys Doubles when Dennis Coke and McNee beat him and Romone Robinson, 21-12, 21-15 in the final.
“I am playing good so far, but I think I need a little more training and preparation for the PanAm Junior Games. With more strength and gym work… I plan to medal for my country,” said Isaacs, who has played in two previous Pan Am Junior Games, but so far has not been able to finish in the top four.
Meanwhile Sean Wilson, one of the best players in the region in his age group, won the Under-15 Boys Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles, as well as the Under-17 Boys Singles.
“I feel I can compete at a high standard. I feel I can win the gold medal for singles, for doubles, but I’m not so sure about the mixed doubles yet,” said the 14-year-old, highly regarded as one of the top three junior players in Jamaica.
His brother Shane Wilson took the triple in the Under-13 — Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles.
In the Under-11 category, Zane Reid won the Boys Singles, Shannon Morgan the Girls Singles, with Adam Taylor sharing the gold in both the Boys and Mixed Doubles.
