New champion for U-14 basketball tourney
WAKEFIELD, Trelawny — A new champion will be crowned in the ISSA/KFC/Western Conference Under-14 basketball competition for the first time in four years after Muschett High edged Herbert Morrison Technical by two points (34-32) as both teams advanced to Wednesday’s final.
All three teams taking part in the league, including outgoing champions Cornwall College, finished the competition tied on nine wins and it took the second tie-breaker to decide the two who would advance.
The first tie-breaker, in the case the teams are level on points, was the head-to-head results, but each team had the same record so the second tie-breaker (points differential) was used, and after their 20-plus points loss to Muschett on Wednesday, Cornwall were eliminated.
Cornwall College are, however, protesting the eligibility of a Muschett High player, who missed the first two rounds, having taken part in the Under-16 league earlier.
On Friday, Muschett came from behind to beat Herbert Morrison to clinch their place in the finals trailing 4-8 and 12-18 after the first two quarters before turning it around in the second half, winning the third quarter 12-3 for a 24-21 lead then held off Herbert Morrison in the last quarter to win.
Muschett’s Karlington Barrett led all scorers with 10 points, Alston Billings scored eight, while Lamar Thompson had six points.
Ralique Grant scored nine points for Herbert Morrison, while David Peck scored seven points.
