Flow powers North Coast schools with free Internet
PRIMARY and secondary schools along Jamaica’s north coast now have access to the fastest most reliable Internet and highest-quality digital cable through a special initiative of Flow.
Since starting business on the island almost five years ago, the broadband service provider has been making good on its promise to “power” qualifying public schools with free cable and Internet under a specially developed programme called Building Leaders Through Technology Programme.
Recently, a total of 10 schools in St Ann and St Mary received Flow’s services as the company continues to roll out its triple play service in the area; the most recent beneficiaries being Marcus Garvey Technical High, Iona High, Port Maria High, Boscobel Primary and Exchange All Age School.
According to Michele English, president and chief operating officer at Flow: “The objective of the programme, is to enhance the learning and teaching environment of schools.”
English explained that Flow felt it was important to ensure that young students and teachers were exposed to the latest technologies.
“We also work with other private sector groups to expand the scope of the programme to assist with computer donations, mentoring, training and other activities designed to help build critical skills of young people,” English stated. English also added that “the response to the initiative so far, has been fantastic! Students and teachers alike really look forward to Flow coming into their schools to make a difference.”
Principals and teachers of schools have also conveyed their sincere gratitude to Flow for their kind support.
According to Perleta Trail, principal of Boscobel Primary “Many schools would not be able to afford these services on their own.”
She continued by saying that: “The focus on rural schools is extraordinary, as students of these schools also get a chance to garner information through other important mediums.”
Principal Hummes-Johnson of Iona High also commented on the recent installation of cable at her school. She commended Flow for ‘fostering such a wonderful partnership’ and added that the access to educational content, via cable and Internet, would definitely enhance the delivery of lessons to students.”
Over the past five years, the Building Leaders Through Technology Programme, has seen over 150 schools in Kingston, Portmore, Ocho Rios, Mandeville and Montego Bay receiving commercial grade Internet and educational cable.
