Young gets first national pick
FORMER William Knibb Memorial High School sprinter Jason Young was included on the 37-member Jamaica team that will participate in next week’s Senior Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Track and Field Championships.
Despite showing promises as a high school athlete, Young who is making the national team for the first time, failed to make it to either the Carifta Games or other junior teams.
He however, lowered his personal best time in the 200m twice at the recent JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Senior Trials, while clocking 20.53 seconds as he finished seventh in the finals that included four men from Trelawny.
Steve Mullings won the race while Mario Forsythe was third to make his first national senior team; Marvin Anderson was fourth. Young, who is selected for the first time to represent the country, joins three other western Jamaican athletes on the team that will leave Jamaica next Wednesday for the event that will be held in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico from July 15 to 17.
Former Mannings School sprint hurdler Vonette Dixon has been named in the team along with intermediate hurdler Roxroy Cato and sprinter Dexter Lee.
Dixon was second in the 100m hurdles at the national trials and should make the team to the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea in late August.
Cato was third in the 400m hurdles finals, edging out the veteran Danny McFarlane, but he is yet to make the ‘A’ qualifying standard for the World Championships, while Lee was sixth in the 100m final in his first national senior championships.
