J’cans depart for CAC Senior Champs
LOCALLY-based members of Jamaica’s 37-member track and field team left the island early yesterday morning for Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, for the Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Senior Championships in that country, starting tomorrow through Sunday.
The remaining members of the squad — 20 men and 17 women — will leave for Puerto Rico from their respective home bases. The contingent was selected following the JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships at the National Stadium in late June.
On the men’s side, 2009 400m hurdles champion Leeford Green, who claimed the intermediate hurdles title at the trials, has been included. He will be joined by University of Arkansas long jumper Tarick Batchelor, 400m hurdler Roxroy Cato, 400m runner Riker Hylton, discus thrower Jason Morgan, Dexter Lee, former national 100m champion Oshane Bailey, Sheldon Mitchell, Jason Young and Rasheed Dwyer.
On the women’s side, sprint hurdler Andrea Bliss, former Vere Technical sprinter Jura Levy, who created a minor upset with a top-three finish at the championships in June, Simone Facey and Samantha Henry-Robinson will represent the country.
The team is accompanied by head coach Danny Hawthorne, his assistants Orville Byfield, Jermaine Shand and Dalton Evans; manager Marlene Hamilton and assistant manager Christopher Marshall.
