The Caribbean’s Finest

Style Observer

For while we remain unabashedly proud of The Rock’s status as a must-do spot for the global fabulocracy and are eager for more to spread the good news we take it one step further this week and introduce the Caribbean’s finest…

ANGUILLA

Altamer African Sapphire

Consider the über-private, ultra-chic Altamer African Sapphire if a family vacay is in the cards. The posh eight-room villa has rooms tastefully furnished with African art and artefacts, and furnished with Pommele African wood throughout. There’s also the exquisite open-air hot tub complete with sweeping views of the Shoal Bay West, a true testament to Altamer African Sapphire’s perfect mix of technology, comfort and style.

ANTIGUA

Jumby Bay

Paul McCartney, Mariah Carey, Hillary Swank, Jim Carrey and Eddie Murphy have all stayed at Jumby Bay. Plus, its serene enchantment (it’s on a 300-acre private island off the coast of Antigua and only accessible by boat) defines exclusivity.

BAHAMAS

Musha Cay Resort

The Bahamas is prime celeb real estate with Johnny Depp and Nicholas Cage owning a piece of Caribbean charm on the super-hot Musha Cay. Twenty four guests — hand-picked by you, of course — can indulge in Musha Cay Resort’s splendour at any one time.

Tilloo Pond

It’s one of The Bahamas’ best-kept secrets. Little wonder, really, as it oozes romanticism and stately grandeur. A fave for corporate retreats hosted by bigwigs, Tilloo’s gorgeous Eden-like grounds, magnificent accommodations and picturesque view of the Atlantic makes it fab for brain-storming and more brain storming sessions.

BARBADOS

Sandy Lane

We so agree with Sandy Lane’s mantra of “making you feel so at home… you’ll never want to leave”. With extra-spacious bedrooms to die for, Rolls Royce Phantoms in their fleet of cars, and A-class service, living the good life never felt so right.

Greensleeves

Truly an exclusive getaway, Greensleeves is without a doubt everything you want in an escape. The Mongolian temple doors of this magnificent villa lead to an amazing celeb-beloved water garden that keeps guests coming back for more.

Lime Grove Lifestyle Centre

Great vacays are even better when good retail therapy is in the mix. Just ask our global style ambassador Karen Kranenburg who pointed us in the direction of Lime Grove Lifestyle Centre and its 5,000 square feet of Barbados’ high-end designer’s paradise — we’re talking about Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Armani Exchange, to name a few — where luxury is anything but an afterthought.

BELIZE

Casa Estrella Luxury Beach Villa

If you’re craving an exotic getaway, jet into Belize for a respite at the exquisite Casa Estrella Luxury Beach Villa. Neatly tucked away on the picturesque Cayo Espanto Island, the oh-so-serene two-storey, two-bedroom abode with a view of the azure Caribbean Sea provides the ultimate luxury fix.

DOMINICA

Secret Bay

A nature-lover’s dream, the eco-friendly, luxurious Secret Bay boutique hotel sits on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea in the lush virgin territory of Dominica. Designed by award-winning Latin American architect Fruto Vivas to take full advantage of the island’s pristine beauty, with the Zabuco and Zing Zing villas and Ti-fey and Mapou bungalows composed of Guyanese Greenheart hardwood and locally sourced cedar, owned by Gregor Nassief and Sandra Vivas, managed by our own Christopher Seaga — you’ll enjoy the villas that are raised above-ground to afford guests the feeling of being ‘on top of the world’, as well as better ventilation and magnificent views. With floors and door by Dougall Flooring you’ll understand why we’re raving about this truly Caribbean property. Dominica is also where the fabulous former super model Nancy Martin calls home.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Casa Bahia

Elegant and exclusive, Casa Bahia offers seclusion and effortless sexiness. Rest super-comfortably in their eight-bedroom villa, divided into three pavilions that will, we’re sure, excite your senses.

Castellamonte

When you’re voted “one of the top 10 villas in the Caribbean”, there’s no skimping on fabulosity. The five-star-rated Castellamonte sits on the untouched northern coastline of the island. Of course, the elegant Italian-themed décor and well-appointed facilities make it a must-do on your travel list.

GRENADA

Spice Island Resort

The epitome of Caribbean chic, the service at Spice Island Resort is truly unparallelled. Think heightened attentiveness. Even better are the floating canopy beds, powder sand beaches, and Molton Brown amenities. Exhaling sighs of satisfaction has never felt more appropriate.

A trip to Grenada is incomplete without sitting and dining with Sir Royston Hopkin and Lady Hopkin. Thhe family has done much to not only market the region but to position it as a perfect hideaway for the global fabulocracy. We could gush all year but would rather you experience it yourself.

SPICE ISLAND SIDEBAR

Sir Roy Hopkin Shines

Grenadian hotelier Sir Royston O Hopkin KCMG, recently received not one, but three major accolades for his years of service to the Caribbean’s hotel and tourism industry. The owner and chairman of Spice Island Beach Resort collected the 2011 Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) Lifetime Achievement Award at the Rhythms of the Caribbean Ball in New York on June 10th. He is the first Grenadian to receive this award, which follows closely on the heels of his recent knighthood by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. There is, too, another Lifetime Achievement Award from the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA). Sir Hopkin stayed true to his passion, using his acceptance speech to appeal to the Caribbean government and tourism officials present. He implored them to commit to a more policy-driven, strategic approach — a consolidated regional marketing programme for the Caribbean. “For years we have been unable to get together while other regions of the world have been promoting themselves in a unified manner,” Sir Royston opined.

“These regions will surpass us if we don’t get our act together and recognise that travel and tourism is so important to our economies as the single largest contributor to GDP in the Caribbean,” he cautioned. SO Congratulates Sir Hopkin on his Lifetime Achievement Awards.

La Luna

With 16 thatch-covered, wood-and-stone-sided cottages that feel totally boho-chic, La Luna, which sits on an isolated beach at Quarantine Point, has the perfect hedonistic edge, and the best news is: there is no one to bother you as you soak up the ambience. Dinner by the way can be enjoyed in Mustique a mere helicopter ride away. Sinfully decadent we know but so amazing.

ST BARTS

Le Sereno

Sun-loving jetsetters, including Hollywood hearthrob Ethan Hawke, head to the très chic Le Sereno, nestled on the beautiful Grand Cul-de-Sac bay where the who’s who lounge on elegant furniture created by famed Parisian designer Christian Liaigre, take in the spare décor, and enjoy decadent meals.

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

Necker Island

It was on the magnificent cliffs of Necker Island that Nick Lachey wed longtime belle Vanessa Minnillo two weeks ago, and with good reason, too. The swanky Balinese-style property, owned by corporate tycoon Sir Richard Branson, is a playground for Hollywood royalty the likes of Mel Gibson, Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg.

PS: You never heard it from us but Adam Stewart has enjoyed time out there with the Branson family.

TURKS & CAICOS

Parrot Cay

A favourite of Hollywood A-listers (former spouses Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson spent their honeymoon there; and Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner celebrated their anniversary at the property), this über-chic, secluded escape comes complete with an award-winning holistic spa to heighten your relaxing experience.

ST VINCENT & THE GRENADINES

Petit St Vincent Resort

Smartly removed from the tourist mecca of the island, the Petit Resort features 22 private cottages notched in the hills and bluffs to catch the sea breeze. It’s cabin fever you’re likely to love!

ST MAARTEN

La Samanna

Your premium wine comes from a state-of-the-art cellar, and your posh beachfront suite or villa’s windows open to extraordinary views of the ocean. Everything about the luxe La Samanna venue is wonderfully delightful, and its je nais se quoi will no doubt have you planning return visits.

ST LUCIA

Cap Maison

Lavish and elite are words that typify Cap Maison. The resort offers a private retreat in spacious suites, and let’s not forget the mah-velous views of the ocean.

Jalousie Plantation

From its luxurious Egyptian cotton linens to its French Caribbean charm, it’s no wonder the enchanting resort won the 2010 Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Travel Awards for Favourite Leisure Hotel, The Americas and the Caribbean.

Sandals La Toc

The awe-inspiring Sandals La Toc gets the nod for ultimate exclusivity and five-star indulgences — take that to mean breathtaking vistas and tantalising gardens. Our tip for the fab and glam: be sure to check out the Millionaire Suites.
