Jamaican youth entrepreneurs off to Canada
FIVE young entrepreneurs are representing Jamaica at the 41st Next Generation Leader’s Forum in Ontario, Canada this week.
They are: Shereen Henry, 19, from St Jago High School, Kevonnie Whyte, 16, from from Ardenne High School, Jerome Cowan, 21, from the LEAD Youth Club, Damion Laylor, 22, of RISE Life Management and Oshane Allen, 18, from Jamaica College.
These five youths were all apart of the top five winning schools in the annual Junior Achievement Jamaica Entrepreneurship Competition, held earlier this year.
According to Paul McFarlane, marketing coordinator, Junior Achievement Jamaica, these five individuals have earned outstanding merits and deserve this opportunity.
“At the forum, not only will they promote brand Jamaica and the products that their individual groups created in the competition; they will engage in high-level, business-focused discussions and learning sessions aimed at broadening their leadership and entrepreneurship skills,” McFarlane told TEENage last week.
The Junior Achievement Jamaica Entrepreneurship Competition climaxed on June 25.
“Approximately 600 students entered the compeition this year. Not only were these top achievers taken from that pool, but they were apart of the top five groups within the competition. They were also selected by their group members, as being the most outstanding and supportive group member during the competition… They deserve this opportunity,” McFarlane said.
McFarlane added that these five individuals will also compete against hundreds across the globe, for top global entrepreneurship awards in the categories — Global Vision, Global Inspiration and Global Social Responsibility at the Junior Achievement level.
Junior Achievement Jamaica will sponsor their trip to the 41st Next Generation Leader’s Forum that will occur between August 6 to 12.
The five youths are accompanied by Winfred Johnson, the regional manager of Junior Achievement Jamaica. The forum will be held at the Queens School of Business in Ontario.
