Off and running! – Asafa back in training
Less than 48 hours after withdrawing from the men’s 100 metres at the 13th IAAF World Athletics Championships, former world record holder Asafa Powell is said to be back in training with the hope of making the 4×100 metres relays set for next weekend.
The 28-year-old athlete’s agent Paul Doyle told the Observer last night that the world’s fastest man over the distance this season was close to being ready to compete.
Doyle also said the MVP camp has called a press conference for 6:00 pm (South Korea time, 4:00 am Jamaica time today) to update the media.
Doyle said earlier this week that Powell had failed to recover from a niggling groin injury that also saw him skip the London Diamond League meet earlier this month.
The men’s 100 metres started last night with the final slated for tomorrow morning (Jamaica time).
Meanwhile Maurice Smith, the first Jamaican to compete on yesterday’s opening session of the 13th IAAF World Championships, is currently in 15th position behind leader Ashton Eaton of the USA, who won Heat One in 10.46 seconds for 985 points. A number of Jamaicans will compete on today’s second day.
