Barbican near Women’s League glory
Barbican will look to press home their advantage when they tackle Portmore Strikers in the second leg of the Sherwin Williams Women’s League final at the Waterhouse mini-stadium starting at 6:00 pm.
In a one-sided affair, Barbican slammed their arch-rivals 4-0 in last Saturday’s first-leg at the said venue and coach Charles Edwards said there will be no letting up as his girls hunt a historic fourth consecutive league title.
“The first problem we need to safeguard against is complacency, so we will take the game to them and try to knock them out and get all the sting out of them as early as possible,” he said.
The former national women’s coach outlined that he does really see a way back for his opponents, but warned that stranger things have happened in football.
“It’s really, really difficult (for them), but in football anything can happen and a little luck can run their way, and then the next thing you know, you are down two or three goals,” said Edwards.
To prevent giving up the handsome advantage, Barbican will be “be coming at full strength” against a Portmore team having it all to play.
Following their first-leg defeat, Portmore coach Derrick Johnson admitted that his team will have a very difficult task in trying to get back from four goals down, but promised that his team will come out fighting to the final whistle.
He is concerned that his team may lack a bit of leadership with inspiration captain Rochelle Bryan out on a red card.
Still, Portmore have quality within their ranks and will look to Iesha Mowatt, Tashawna Vincent and the league’s leading scorer, Venecia Reid, who is one shy of taking her tally to 40.
