Foundation set up in memory of Danny Buchanan
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — The family of the late Cabinet Minister Donald (Danny) Buchanan has established a Foundation in his memory to support the education of a young cricketer from South West St Elizabeth on an annual basis.
Buchanan served SW St Elizabeth for 18 years as Member of Parliament representing the People’s National Party (PNP).
Buchanan’s widow, Dorothy Buchanan told Observer West that the Foundation would also seek to support Early Childhood Education which like cricket was a “passion” for her late husband.
She said the cricket scholarship would be based on the local primary school cricket competition and the GSAT results.
“There has to be a balance between the ability to play cricket and academics,” she explained.
Mrs Buchanan gave details of the Foundation at a handing over of her late husband’s cricket books to the St Elizabeth Parish Library on September 28, which would have been his 69th birthday.
In addition to announcing a range of activities to raise funds, she called on family members and friends of “Danny Buck’ to give “whatever they can offer, whether its on a monthly, annual or a one-time contribution so his (Buchanan’s) name will forever be remembered by the awarding of these scholarships”.
The Directors of the Foundation are listed as Dorothy Quest-Buchanan, Hugh Buchanan, Junior Bennett, Beverley Manley, Milverton Reynolds, Blanche Harrison, Bernard Henry.
A career trade unionist and politician, Buchanan died in January after an intense battle with colon cancer. He served as cabinet minister in labour and social security, water and housing, and information and development. He represented the PNP in a range of capacities including General Secretary and for many years was the party’s representative on the Electoral Commission.
