Bolt, Blake, Parchment among UWI Awardees
TRACK stars Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake will join World University Games gold medallist Hansle Parchement on the list of Awardees as the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, celebrates the extraordinary achievements of its home teams tomorrow.
These include the Racers Track Club and the Mona athletics contingent and will take the form of a special reception dubbed, ‘Celebrating with the Stars’.
The ceremony is scheduled for 3:00 pm and will be held at the Undercroft Senate Building.
Riding high on sporting successes in Daegu and Shenzhen, the recipients also include Jason Young, who captured the silver medal in the men’s 200m final in the World University Games where Parchment took gold in the men’s 110m hurdles in a personal best 13.24 seconds in the third-fastest time ever recorded by a Jamaican.
“I am elated. It is an honour to be recognised by my institution and to be honoured on the same platform as both Yohan and Usain,” says Parchment.
“My dream is to continue performing well and hopefully I can join them as medal winner in a major global event.”
The event will feature the presentation of some 27 awards, nine of them to medallists from the Racers Track Club; two to the World University Games medallists and the rest to coaches and support staff, as well as to other supported athletes.
Prior to the presentation, there will be a grand appearance by the athletes and special performances from the Mona Campus community.
UWI, in the past year has recorded significant performances and developments in various facets of the sporting arena. Director of Sports Dalton Myers says the primary objective of the institution’s new thrust is to create an environment conducive to the academic and athletic development of students.
“We believe that once this thrust is achieved we will be better able to contribute to the development of sports in the region, considering we are a regional tertiary institution.
“By providing access to world-class facilities we can help to build a better sports culture in the Caribbean,” he added.
Tomorrow’s event reinforces the determination of the Mona Campus to raise the bar in sports. Building on its tradition of excellence in academic performance and culture, UWI anticipates entering new frontiers in local, regional and international sports.
The function will be broadcast live on the university’s radio station, NewsTalk 93 FM.
