Cornwall, Spot Valley in crucial battle

Lennon, Buff Bay, St Thomas into Inter-Zone

BROWNS TOWN, St Ann — All but two places in the Inter-Zone round of the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel daCosta schoolboy football competition were confirmed yesterday following the playing of several rescheduled games.

Five schools confirmed group honours and booked their places in the Ben Francis Knock-Out competition that starts tomorrow, while the final two places will be decided this afternoon when Cornwall College host Spot Valley in Montego Bay.

Yesterday, Cedric Titus High in Zone C, Clarendon College in Zone H, Glenmuir High in Zone I, Port Antonio High in Zone K and Paul Bogle High in Zone L all emerged group winners, while Lennon High, Buff Bay High and St Thomas Technical all advanced to the Inter-Zone round.

Ojay Smith scored his seventh goal of the season for Cedric Titus to edge Browns Town High, 1-0, to improve to 25 points and leapfrog Marcus, 23 points, to win Zone C.

A 2-2 draw in their highly-anticipated game was enough for Clarendon College to win Zone H with 30 points, one more than runners-up Lennon, while Edwin Allen, who fought to the end and beat Claude McKay, 4-0, finished a point back on 28, the closest finish of any group, with two points separating the three teams.

Glenmuir did enough to beat Kemps Hill, 1-0, and take Zone I honours with 31 points with a game to spare.

Port Antonio edged Buff Bay by a goal to win Zone K after both ended on 19 points.

Port Antonio beat Fair Prospect, 2-0, to end with a goal difference of +8, while Buff Bay’s 6-0 win over Annotto Bay took them to +7.

Paul Bogle won Zone L with 17 points after 5-0 whipping of Robert Lightbourne, while St Thomas Technical, who had finished their fixtures last week, advanced as the second-placed team with 15 points, the same as Seaforth, but with a better goal-difference.

St Thomas Technical have a +16 goal difference, while Seaforth, who beat Morant Bay, 6-1, finished on +14.

Meanwhile today, with Zone A leaders St James High, on 24 points and with a goal difference of +8, all but certain to get a spot, it will be a battle royal between Cornwall College and Spot Valley, both on 23 points and who drew 1-1 in their first meeting and have not lost in their last 13 games combined.

A win for either team would see them clinch zone honours, ending St James’ run of four straight, but a draw would be enough to see Cornwall, winners of their last six games, advance.

Cornwall are tied on the same goal difference as St James, but Spot Valley only have a +2, so only a win will be good enough for them.

Spot Valley have never beaten Cornwall in their three seasons in the competition, but a 2-2 draw last year proved pivotal as they moved away from the 11-time champions to get second place and a first ever spot in the Inter-Zone round.
