All eyes on St Catherine mid-season finals
THE mid-season finals of both LIME-sponsored St Catherine Major League and Division One take centre stage today at the Prison Oval with the latter being the curtain-raiser, starting 2 o’clock.
Division One leaders Old Harbour Bay FC face Travellers FC in what is anticipated to be a hotly-contested grudge match following the former’s weekend defeat at the hands of their opponents.
There are neither injury worries nor suspensions in the ‘Bay’ camp, but under-17 players Kamar Myers, Devroy Gray and Najja Biggs are expected to be handed their first start in the senior team.
It was the second game in four days that Old Harbour Bay were playing, both ending in defeats, after they were knocked out at the semi-final stage of the LIME KO last Wednesday.
It is the only blemish in what has been so far a fantastic season for coach Marlon Johnson, who has guided his team to 12-match unbeaten run in all competitions before suffering back-to-back defeats.
Johnson will be eager to repair whatever damage those losses would have inflicted on the psyche of his players, who are likely to be highly motivated to exact revenge.
Travellers will take pride in the fact they are the only team in the league to beat Old Harbour Bay, but their 1-0 win which incidentally came in time added-on, courtesy of a Delroy Perez strike, was far from convincing.
The boys from Cheesefield will again look towards the league’s top marksman Christopher Johnson, who has scored seven goals in nine matches, while coach Craig Richards must establish a suitable strategy to contain Old Harbour Bay’s attacking threat lead by Lowan Myers. But it’s the battle in mid-field that will be crucial for the team that will win.
Frazsiers’ utility player Pierre McPherson and Codean Smikle, who plays in an attacking midfield role or strike sometimes, are both out due to suspension, while Andrae Austin of Rodwood will miss the final after he saw red in his team’s 1-1 draw at Homestead against DB Basovak on the weekend.
Frazsiers Whip enters today’s Major League clash perched atop the standings and comes into this encounter high on confidence after a classy 3-0 win over Old Harbour Bay placed them in finals of the Parish KO. Having being pushed real hard by Old Harbour Bay, Rayon Gordon return to league action three days later and guided his team to a gritty 1-0 win over Black Lion FC.
Kemar Beckford, Demarley Dawkins are certain to start for Frazsiers once declared fit as the attacking duo have being getting the goals.
