25% voter turnout
WITH just under two hours before the close of the polls in the local government elections now underway the Electoral Office of Jamaica is reporting a 24.9 per cent voter turnout as at 3:00 pm this afternoon.
Public Education Officer for the EOJ Christin Senior speaking with the Observer this afternoon said the turnout so far could be safely classified as “low”.
“Twenty-five percent out of a hundred percent is low,” she noted.
She however said she was unable to compare the 2007 local government election figures with the current numbers at this time.
In the meantime the EOJ said it has had no reports of any major incidents.
“There has been nothing significant, there were a few calls from CAFFE observers (Citizens Action for Free and Fair Elections) to say they were not being allowed access and from some members of the media as well but nothing we can’t pacify,” Senior told the
Observer.
“It has been relatively peaceful,” she said.
The polls which opened at 7:00 this morning will close at 5 pm this afternoon.
