Edwards’ lone strike tames Lion
HARBOUR View ended Humble Lion’s chances of a top-two finish following a 1-0 victory at the Effortville Community Centre as the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) nears its end on Sunday.
John-Ross Edwards scored the game’s only goal 11 minutes into the second half, and coach Donovan Halyes was pleased with how his troops continue to perform nearing the end of this campaign, after two wins, a draw and a loss in this fourth and final round.
“We have beaten Humble Lion all season, so we were hell bent on winning the game… and we want to close out (the season) good, because when you close out good it gives a level of motivation coming into the next season,” he said.
Both teams threatened for most of the first-half but failed to make use of their openings, although towards the end of the half the host had two great strikes by Cornelious Henry denied by Michaud Barrett in goal.
In-between Carlington Smith had a glorious chance but failed to connect with Denzil Watson’s cross from six yards, with Barrett at his mercy.
After the break, Harbour View looked dangerous on the break and Kemeel Wolfe forced a spectacular save from Peter Harrison, while Edwards pulled a shot wide after he won possession on the break.
But the industrious Edwards made no mistakes minutes later when he won possession in midfield and hit a superb volley past a hapless Harrison, to give the visitors the lead.
Humble Lion then made three attacking changes, one of which was Kemar Mills, who suffered a horrific head injury three seasons ago and was playing his first competitive game since.
Two minutes from the end Mills had a great opportunity to mark his return with a goal, but his lifted his effort over the bar after Watson gave him a sitter.
Coach Lenworth Hyde said his players lost their focus and paid the price.
“We created numerous chances, but the players were lackadasical… the killer instinct wasn’t there, although we set targets to win the game and finish as high as possible.”
