Jamaica 1978

1. Jamaica won seven medals at the 1978 Commonweath Games in Edmonton Alberta, Canada. Jamaica won two gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

2. Donald Quarrie won gold in the 100m finals of the 1978 Commonwealth Games.

3. September 25, 1978, Ricardo ‘Bibi’ Gardner was born in St Andrew, Jamaica. Today, he is one of four Jamaican footballers who has over 100 national appearances.

4. Green Bay Massacre: On January 5, the Green Bay Massacre was a covert operation carried out by special forces of the Jamaican Government.

5. July 21, Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley was born. Damian was two years old when his father Bob Marley died. He is the only child born to Marley and Cindy Breakspeare, Miss World 1976.

6. The Workers Party of Jamaica (WPJ) was a Marxist political party in Jamaica. WPJ was founded on 17 December by Trevor Munroe, along with Elean Thomas and others. Munroe, a Rhodes scholar from Oxford University, served as its general secretary. The forerunner of WPJ was the Workers Liberation League.

7. In 1978, the Jamaican film Rockers came out. Rockers is a 1978 Jamaican film by Theodoros Bafaloukos. Several popular reggae artistes star in the movie, including Leroy ‘Horsemouth’ Wallace, Burning Spear, Gregory Isaacs, Big Youth, Dillinger, and Jacob Miller. Rockers was originally to be a documentary but blossomed into a full-length feature showing the reggae culture at its peak.

8. The One Love Peace Concert was held on April 22 at the National Stadium. This concert was held during a political civil war in Jamaica between opposing parties Jamaica Labour Party and the People’s National Party and was headlined by Bob Marley and The Wailers.

9. Reggae Sunsplash is a reggae music festival first staged in the northern part of Jamaica. In 1985 it expanded with the addition of an international touring festival. The festival ran annually until 1996, with a final event in 1998, before it was revived in 2006.

10. July 17, 1978, Marlon Greenwood was born in Kingston Jamaica. He is an American Football Linebacker who plays for Omaha Nighthawks in the United Football League.
