Hoopers seek rebound after loss to Jaguars
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Fresh from their narrow defeat against leaders Granville Jaguars in an exciting game on Sunday, MoBay Hoopers will take on winless Lucea Flames in a return-round Flow National Basketball League-West game at Montego Bay Cricket Club this afternoon at 6:30.
Hoopers failed to hand Granville their first loss this season, losing, 83-79, but should bounce back against Flames who are yet to win this season, losing all five matches played.
Defending champions Catherine Hall All-Stars restricted Lucea to just 11 points in the second half on their way to a 83-33 beating.
Catherine Hall lead with 13 points from seven games, one more than Granville, who have played six games, with Hoopers and Sav Hawks in third place on nine points, followed by Tigers on six and Lucea five.
After scoring at least 100 points in their two previous games, Granville were expected to continue their hot streak, but ran into a determined Hoopers team that saw five players score in double figures.
There was little between the teams as Hoopers matched Granville step for step, as after trailing by two points, 17-19, after the first quarter, Hoopers drew level 38-all at half-time.
Granville, who were led by 28 points from Leroy Lawrence, took a slight four-point lead in the third quarter and held on after the teams both scored 24 in the fourth as the game went down to the line.
In addition to his 28 points, Lawrence had nine rebounds and three assists. Dave Black Jnr had 20 points and Andrew Whilby 15 points and seven rebounds.
Nicholas Watson scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Hoopers; Dwayne Johns scored 15 points; Rayon Gardner scored 12 points; Marlon Comrie scored 11 points and had 16 rebounds, while Rayon Bolt scored 10 points.
In the first game, Catherine Hall ran roughshod over the hapless Lucea Flames, who managed to score in double figures in just one quarter.
Goyan Malcolm scored 19 of his game-high 25 points in the first half to lead Catherine Hall. Kurt Dorman scored 18 points and had six rebounds; Marvin Powell had 14 points and Jermaine Rerrie 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Cecil Cole had 10 points for Lucea, who trailed 9-18 after the first quarter and were down by 20 points, 22-42, at half-time.
Lucea managed just five points in the third quarter to slip further behind 27-55.
