Sway YP says too much swag
WITH the long list of hopefuls waiting for their big break, up-and-coming dancehall artiste Sway YP believes he has what it takes.
“Right now everybody is doing songs about swag and bout how dem clean. Nothing is wrong with that but I’m bringing back the di toughness, the streets, and the garrisons to the music,” Sway YP told the Jamaica Observer.
Sway YP, whose given name is Oneil Green, said the YP in his alias stands for Yung Pioneer which is also the label he and his family runs — Yung Pioneer Productions.
No stranger to the Corporate Area inner-city life, the 26-year-old is a past student of St Anne’s High School in west Kingston and hails from the Seaview Gardens community in St Andrew.
He lists his early influence in music first came from the 1990s, Seaview Gardens-based dancehall outfit Innocent Crew.
“I use to listen their songs and deejayed to my friends and other students,” said sway YP. “The reception I got was tremendous. So, I decided to start writing my own lyrics and the rest is history,” he continued.
According to Sway YP, he definitely thinks this is his time to make it big in the industry.
“I know it’s a hard industry to break in but my versatility and lyrics sets me apart from other artistes,” he said.
So far, he has already recorded songs such as Girls Girls (Shelf Top Riddim) which is produced by Howard Hides’s D’av Productions; She Love Me (Run the Scheme Riddim); and, Diss Year (both produced by Yung Pioneer Productions). Plans are at an advanced stage to shoot a video for Diss Year.
The DJ said over time, with his “unique voice and versatility”, he will soon have Jamaica and the world singing and dancing to his music.
