Smith wins jumps double at national championships
Ackelia Smith achieved a rare double after she added the women’s triple jump to her long jump title on Saturday’s third day of the JAAA national championships at the National Stadium.
Smith jumped 13.95m (2.0m/s) to win her first senior national triple jump title after she had won her fourth long jump title on Thursday with 6.81m as she punched her ticket to the Commonwealth Games.
Only four competitors showed up for the triple jump but, where it lacked quantity, it made up in quality as former St Jago High jumper Jade-Ann Dawkins of Kansas State University was second with 13.67m (0.9m/s), while NCAA champion Shantae Foreman of Clemson University finished third with a wind aided 13.49m (5.0m/s).
Machaeda Linton of Texas A&M University was fourth with a wind aided 13.11m (4.0m/s).
