Holland snatch Trelawny Major League crown
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — Holland United became champions of the Trelawny/National Rums Major League after playing to a 1-1 draw with Kinloss at Elliston Wakeland Centre for a 3-1 aggregate win on Sunday.
Holland, who topped the point’s tables after the first two rounds, won the first leg 2-0 a week earlier at the same venue.
Roniel Cole scored in the 11th minute to increase Holland’s lead to three goals before Kinloss striker Ronique Haynes, who missed the first leg through suspension, scored a consolation in the 90th.
Cole was sent off in the 84th after hurling abuses at an assistant referee and picking up his second yellow card.
Kinloss also ended a man short after Marvin Bent was sent off by referee Recardo Sailsman in the 75th.
Holland, who pocketed the first prize of $150,000, also earned promotion to next season’s Western Confederation Super League, while Kinloss got $75,000 after reaching their first final.
Holland now join St James’ Norwood Strikers as two of the four teams promoted to the Western Confed next season.
As they did in the regular season, Holland dominated Sunday’s game and it was only outstanding goalkeeping from Nicholas Dixon that prevented them from winning by a wider margin.
Until he lost his head and was sent off, Cole was the best player on the pitch and scored a brilliant opening goal, curling the ball from the right side away from Dixon and into the top corner of the goal.
Omar Scott should have finished off a brilliant solo run with a goal in the 70th, but after beating at least six players and making his way into the penalty area, he shot wide of the target.
Late in the game, Haynes’ gave Kinloss fans some thing to cheer when he beat Holland goalkeeper Michael Clarke from close range to level the score.
