Alleged extortionist remanded in custody
DELROY Morgan, who has been charged with extortion, was remanded in custody and will face trial on July 18.
Morgan, who appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, insisted that he was not working alone.
The court heard that Morgan approached a complainant and told her that her son had been kidnapped. He then demanded $90,000 for his safe return.
The complainant said he came to her house and told her that her that a man called ‘Ice Water’ had set up a scheme to have her son kidnapped. She said he told her not to get the police involved or else he would kill her son, her daughter and the woman.
“Him threaten to kill me and my daughter and son your honour, him say if I never pay the money and if I call the police he would kill us,” she said.
The complainant said she went to her pastor and a friend and got a total of $25,000 which she gave him. She then called her son.
“After me give him the $25,000 me call me son and him tell me say him alright your honour, so me decide to go look for ‘Ice Water’, and when me go to him, him say him don’t know nothing about it, and tell me to go to the police,” she said.
The accused, who was silent all along, then decided to speak up.
He claimed he was sent to the complainant’s house by someone named ‘Smith’ for money that she owed. He also said he hired the complainant’s son to fix his motor cycle, which he did not return after a month. He then claimed that Smith approached him with the idea to get the money.
Resident Magistrate Shelly Williams then addressed the complainant, “Seems it’s just you in this hot water because I dont see a “Smith” here,” she said.
