KINGSTON, Jamaica- The Jamaican team of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Sherone Simpson, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Kerron Stewart finished second behind a dominant United States team who smashed the world record.

The Jamaicans however did some smashing of their own, lowering their national record to 41.41 seconds and running the third fastest time in history.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who won the first leg of today’s team was grateful and optimistic as she spoke to reporters in London.

“We had a really good team, all the girls ran great. It was great to get a national record, the Americans were better than us. We have had enough celebrations in Jamaica already,” she said.

Kerron Stewart, who anchored the team said she wasn’t surprised at the outcome but was proud of Jamaica’s performance.

“I knew they would have to break the world record to beat us and they did. They were excellent. We broke our national record but that shows how well the USA team did.”

Even with a national record Sherone Simpson believes the team could run faster.

This second place finish gives Veronica Campbell-Brown her seventh Olympic medal, just two less than Merlene Ottey’s tally.

Campbell-Brown said ,”I’m happy we got the national record. We broke our national record last year and this year, so we are improving. We will get better everytime we run”.

“Not surprised they took the record. The USA have more depth than us. I had a feeling they were going to do it, they had four solid legs. But we did really well,” she added.

In Athens 2004, the Americans dropped the baton and failed to medal, the Jamaican team won. 

In the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing, China, the US team were elimated in the semi-finals, while the Jamaicans dropped the baton in the final, leaving the Russians to run away with the gold.
