T&T defeat Jamaica by one wicket in women’s T20 tourney

Jamaica gave up their perfect win record when they went down to Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) by one wicket in a nail-biting finish in the Regional Women’s Twenty20 tournament at Chedwin Park yesterday.

Jamaica have been joined on 15 points by T&T, Barbados and St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) after four rounds.

Grenada moved into fifth position on 10 points ahead of Guyana and St Lucia with five each and Dominica at the bottom pointless.

In the feature encounter at Chedwin Park, Jamaica had made 96-7 in their allotted 20 overs with Natasha McLean top-scoring with 30 and West Indies star Stafanie Taylor making 29.

Felicia Walters grabbed 3-18 from her four overs and was ably supported by Stacy Ann King with 2-9 from three overs.

Jamaica apparently had the game under control before T&T’s last wicket pair of Anisha Mohammed (eight not out) and Gaiti Seetahal (nine not out), saw them home off the last ball of the innings.

After dismissing T&T, West Indies star Deandra Dottin made a top score of 25 at 52-5 in the 10th over, and Jamaica seemed to be cruising to an easy victory.

But the red and black-clad Soca Warriors, dug in with their lesser-known batswomen and pulled off a very exciting win off the last ball after falling to 71-8 in the 16th over.

Karla Cohen took 3-26 and Chadean Nation 2-14 in Jamaica’s losing effort, while they conceded 10 extras.

In the curtain-raiser, Pamela Lavine stroked an unbeaten 64 to lead Barbados to an eight-wicket win over Guyana.

Guyana made 74-5 off 20 overs with Shemaine Campbell hitting 29 not out and Tremayne Smartt contributing 24. Danielle Small took 2-11 and Shaquana Quintyne 2-22 for the Barbados.

The Bajans got off to a poor start losing two wickets with the score on 14, but Player-of-the-match Lavine played a masterful inning by smashing nine fours, and along with Kyshone Knight who was 22 not out, consolidated and saw Barbados safely home at 95-2.

Meanwhile at Kensington Park, SVG defeated St Lucia by 52 runs. Cordel Jack top-scored with 43 and Myschia George chipped in with 19 as SVG raced to 114 in 19.5 overs.

Brendalin Alcide took 3-18 for St Lucia, but they could only muster a meagre 62 in their reply off 19.2 overs with Roylin Cooper making 14.

Stacy-Ann Adams got 2-12, Rochelle John 2-14 and Latoya Providence 2-16 for SVG.

In the other match at Kensington Park, Grenada condemned Dominica to their fourth defeat in as many games winning by five wickets.

Scores: Dominica 76-9 off 20 overs, (Juncair Valentine 18, Annika Andrews 17, Joslyn Ferrol 11; Afy Fletcher 4-10.

Grenada 77-5 off 15.2 overs with Rachel Cyrus making 17, Anisha Thomas and Afy Fletcher 11. Pearl Etienne grabbed 2-12 in a losing effort for Dominica.

The tournament will take a break today, but resumes tomorrow with St Lucia taking on T&T at Kensington Park at 10:00 am before SVG play Jamaica in the feature encounter at 2:00 pm.

At Chedwin Park, Barbados tackle Grenada at 10:00 am before Dominica hunt their first win against Guyana at 2: 00 pm.
