ST George’s College won the Roper Cup football competition over North Street rivals Kingston College, following matches played at Emmet Park yesterday.

The highly anticipated clash and Cup decider between the present boys of both schools ended in a 1-0 win for St George’s College, the defending Manning Cup champions.

In a closely-contested match in which KC enjoyed territorial domination over their more fancied opponents for most of the playing time, Oshane Boothe gave the ‘Light Blues’ the decider over the ‘Purples’, with a strike from a free-kick in the 10th minute of play.

Despite slick build-ups by KC throughout the match, poor finishing let them down, which guaranteed the victory for St George’s and an overall 2-1 win in the Roper Cup, after the Under-35 teams of both schools played to a 1-1 draw.

The Roper Cup is decided on aggregate score of the two matches in the series — the present boys and the Under-35s.

Anthony Mais scored for St George’s in the Under-35 game, while Dale Dixon did likewise for KC.

KC did not leave the St George’s home ground empty-handed though, as goals from Ian Lindsay and Lance Edwards gave them a 2-1 win over St George’s to lift the Pancho Rankine Trophy, the symbol of supremacy among Old Boys of both schools aged 35 and over. Andrew Johnson scored for St George’s.

Former KC and Jamaica defender Gerry Murray was honoured by St George’s.
