Dear Editor,

Obstetrics and gynaecology has lost one of its masters, Dr Barry Dixon, a doctor devoted to his profession for years. As a young intern under his supervision, I had to learn to be meticulous and thorough.

That was his way and so those were his expectations. Indeed, he was a good man, leader, teacher, professional and surgeon. He devoted his entire life to his craft. The contributions he made to his field are unquestioned. No one deserves to die the way he did, and certainly not Dr Barry Dixon.

The medical community, colleagues, family and friends will mourn his loss for years to come. I am sure his name will be in conversations for how he would treat a case or manage a problem. Although he is no longer present, the memories of his teachings and quiet strength will guide us. Moments like these are alarming and may cause us to lose hope. However, these are the moments that should unite us as a community and as a nation to find ways to deal with these senseless killings that tarnish our image. Killings are no longer relegated to gang violence and drugs. They are now happening to those who make significant contributions to our society.

I sincerely hope that the murder of Dr Barry Dixon does not go unpunished or unsolved. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
