EVEN with only three meets left in the 2012 Jamaica Karting Association (JKA) season, this Sunday’s event will not be one to cruise through for competitors battling for the Abe Ziadie Championship.

“I expect it to be another competitive event,” JKA President Neil Williams told Auto.

While several of the classes are done deals, the coveted Abe Ziadie Memorial Trophy goes to the driver with the highest overall points for the year.

Currently, there are five competitors who have a shot at the title, but the top three are all within a hair’s breadth of each other points-wise.

Leading the points on 255 is Joshua Sirgany. Four points behind is Peter Moodie Jr, and in third place with 232 is Thomas Issa. William Myers and Matthew Williams, in a dead heat, round out the top five.

Moodie Jr enjoys a significant lead in his Rotax Masters class.

“He could theoretically sit out the rest of the year and still win his class,” explained Williams. However, he doubts this will happen given his standing for the overall title.

“Peter will need to get every point he needs against Sirgany,” he said.

In the individual classes, the points spreads are still close enough to encourage aggressive action.

Leader Sirgany and thirdplaced Issa do not have the class cushion enjoyed by Moodie Jr. Sirgany’s Minimax class front position is being challenged by Marc Anthony Eaton. Issa, who leads Rotax Juniors, will have William Myers to deal with. Comer 50 sees Mark Moodie with 175 points to Zander Williams’ 166.5. Like Moodie Jr, Matthew Williams also enjoys a significant lead over Najee Scott.

The action kicks off this Sunday at the Palisadoes International Raceway at approximately 10 am.
