KINGSTON, Jamaica –  Clarendon police have stepped up their manhunt for gunmen who shot and injured a Jamaica Defence Force soldier in the parish over the weekend.

Head of the Clarendon Police Division Michael Bailey said reports are that the JDF member whose name was withheld was on his way home when he was pounced upon by gunmen in Sandy Bay.

“Reports we have are that the soldier was on his way home when he was attacked and shot several times,” SSP Bailey said last night.

The soldier was rushed to a medical facility and then airlifted to a hospital in Kingston where he was admitted in serious condition, SSP Bailey confirmed.

The police have since said that they would “leave no stones unturned” as they stepped up their search for the gunmen.

The shooting of the soldiers brings to three the number of members from the island’s security forces that have come under attack by criminal elements in the last week.

Last Thursday a police Corporal Warren Campbell from OCID was shot and killed by gunmen in Patrick City.

In another incident police are probing reports that a police officer attached to the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Task Force (MOCA) was stabbed and injured by men along University Crescent in St. Andrew.

The other case involves retired Senior Superintendent Tony Hewitt was attacked and gunned down one week ago.
