ON a rain dreary Sunday afternoon, the Red Brigade of Boys’ Town defeated Montego Bay United 2-1 in their Red Stripe Premier League football encounter at Collie Smith Drive.

Due to the enduring inclement weather, the match between hosts Humble Lion and Tivoli Gardens at Effortville had to be called off after only five minutes of play.

In another early kick-off, Harbour View defeated Highgate 3-0 at Drax Hall courtesy of goals from Jermie Lynch (20th minute), John Ross Edwards (87th) and Jermaine Hue (93rd).

The win carries Harbour View to 10 points, while Boys’ Town go to nine.

In Trench Town, the home side opened the scoring in the 39th minute when the prolific Rafiek Thomas took advantage of an empty goal after Montego Bay United goalkeeper ran out and fell, trying to defend against another attempt.

Thomas scored a second goal and his fifth of the season in the 67th minute, while Kemiro James pulled one back for the visitors on the stroke of full time.

Boys’ Town’s Andrew Price was a pleased man last evening as his team triumphed despite adverse conditions.

“A hard fought game. Montego Bay United came here and gave it their all (and) we had to definitely dig in and play hard. Conditions weren’t the best (as) it was very rainy, field very slick and sloppy but I think that we dominated for long periods and we should have taken more opportunities,” he said.

Price added that getting back to victory was always a good thing. “(We) still have a lot of work to do in midfield and defensively, but we are a work in progress and it’s always good to get three points at home and get back on the winning trail,” he noted.

Montego Bay United coach, Nedier dos Santos was philosophical in defeat: “I have to commend my players because they fought till the last minute.

We created a lot of chances (and) we played safe at the back… but I think (we) created chances a lot, but football sometimes is like that (where) you have a performance like that and lose.”
