Blake’s equaliser keeps rookies in hunt
FABIAN ‘Lexus’ Blake came off the bench to hit a late equaliser for Savannah FC to salvage a 1-1 draw in their Red Stripe Premier League game against former champions Waterhouse at Drewsland on Sunday.
Waterhouse went ahead through winger Andre Clennon, but the hosts wasted several opportunities and during the second half, opened the door for the Westmoreland team to salvage a point with only two minutes remaining.
Waterhouse, who were trying to restore pride after losing their previous two matches, started at a frenetic pace and reaped reward when Clennon rose above the defence to put his team ahead from a Theo Brown’s centre.
Just before the goal, a squall forced
referee Wilverglen Lamey to call a 10-minute halt to proceedings.
Waterhouse got their goal on the resumption and should have ended the half with another, but Nicholy Finlayson surprisingly hit wide from close up. This was just after goalkeeper Richard McCallum had gone flying to his left to pull off a brilliant save to keep Waterhouse in the lead.
With the first half just past the halfway mark, the southpaw goalkeeper was left rooted to the spot when Shane Anderson drove a rapier-like shot to his right which struck between the upright and the crossbar, then rebound into play.
Both teams returned for the second half in high spirits, despite the threat of increasing showers. The home team to get out of a rut had to look to go farther ahead, while the visitors tried to keep their respectable run intact.
By this time, the rain was pelting heavily but the field prepared by groundsman Christopher Stanbury was holding admirably. Nonetheless, with more water on the pitch, the home began to look ragged in their play, while their opponents looked more composed and it was little surprise when they drew level from a well-placed header which went out of the reach of goalkeeper McCallum in the dying moments of the game.
