Jamaican named NCAA volleyball player of the week
TWENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD Jamaican Sashane Watson of Shaw University in the NCAA Division Two has been named the Central Inter-collegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) volleyball player of the week.
A past student of Old Harbour High, the 5ft-11in Watson led the Lady Bears with 40 kills in three matches during the week ending September 23. Also tops for Shaw University in digs with 30, Watson has been credited with resurging the Lady Bears this season with 7-5 overall, 3-2 in the CIAA and 1-1 in the Southern Division.
Last year, the Bears won only four games overall and three games in the conference. With just over a month remaining in the volleyball season, the Lady Bears have already surpassed those totals.
Playing volleyball since she was 15, Watson moved to GC Foster College in 2009. She started as a right-side hitter for two years before transitioning to an outside hitter which she found “much more comfortable”.
Watson has won multiple awards as best defender, best hitter and best blocker over the years. She is now doing a bachelors degree in English at Shaw in North Carolina.
