MOTORSPORT marvels from Jamaica’s drag racing and sprint fraternities will reignite the tarmac at Vernamfield Airfield in Clarendon this Sunday.

Originally scheduled for last Sunday but postponed due to inclement weather, the event — dubbed Vernamfield Rebirth! — will see drivers from both disciplines participating in the second Circuit and Drag Test and Tune session. Gates open at 8 am while high-speed action is set to start at 10 am.

Asafa Powell, former 100-metre world record holder, will be among several drag racers to battle head-to-head on the track for bracket racing supremacy, cash prizes and trophies with designated times ranging from eight to 16 seconds.

“Asafa’s 1,000hp Nissan Skyline is the fastest street car in the island and he will be competing against other contenders in a special street car clash at the event, so we’re really excited about watching that take place,” said organiser Kenrick Scott of Wrinkle Wall Promotions.

Powell and his Skyline are expected to go up against Adrian Randle and his Mitsubishi Evolution 8 in the street car challenge. Drag racing veteran Dean Shaw and his Chevy Camarro will be gunning for the top spot in the eight-second class, hoping to walk away with the $100,000 prize. Orville Williams is also expected to create some sparks with his Nissan Pulsar GTI-R in the 9-second class.

The highly anticipated event is also expected to attract a flock of sprinters, including Rallysport Championship leader Jordan Powell in his Toyota Glanza; Matthew Gore in his Mitsubishi Evolution X; Daryl King in his Honda Civic; Spencer Whittingham in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution V; Dean Corrodus in his Honda Civic; Thomas Hall in his Toyota Starlet; and Joel Jackson in his Subaru Impreza.
