I am finding it very difficult to control the tears flowing freely from my eyes as I try to absorb the shocking news of the rape of the eight-year-old girl who was mercilessly raped by two gunmen at Irwin Point, St James.

I have read about numerous incidents of the rape of children in Jamaica over the last 30 years, but there is something about this particular incidents of the rape that has sparked more outrage than any other.

I don’t know what it is that has left me so numb and angry, but believe me, every night before I lay down to sleep I will be saying a loud prayer that her attackers will be brought to justice, and I really don’t care what form it takes.

The minister of national security made a bold prediction shortly after he took office that he intended to reduce the murder rate to only one per day. However, following the murder of three members of the security forces, other murders and more forms of extreme violence in the space of one week, I would not be surprised if he tenders his resignation shortly.
