Time for technology?

EUROPEAN FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

EPL: Cynics were left baying for technology in football yet again as high-profile blunders by officials marred this Premier League weekend. Manchester United pegged Chelsea back to within one point atop the table after they outlasted the Londoners 3-2 under controversial circumstances as Chicharito Hernandez scored the winner from what appeared to be an offside position.

Liverpool seem to have been robbed of three points in an entertaining Merseyside derby, which ended 2-2 as Luis Suarez had a would-be winner in the final moments contentiously disallowed for offside.

Manchester City clipped Swansea 1-0 despite a lacklustre performance while Tottenham overcame Southampton 2-1. Newcastle and Wigan won by similar 2-1 margins against West Brom and West Ham respectively.

Mikel Arteta, amid Jack Wilshere’s long-awaited injury return stole three points for Arsenal with a lone late strike against 10-man Queen’s Park Rangers, while there were goals galore in Reading and Fulham’s 3-3 draw. Stoke and Sunderland ended goalless, whilst in a clash of struggling teams 10-man Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Norwich.

Can they stop scoring?

La Liga: Barcelona were ruthless once again as they dispatched Rayo Vallecano 5-0 as the Argentine magician Lionel Messi reached a personal milestone of 300 senior goals with a brace.

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo was not to be outdone as he scored twice in his side’s 5-0 rout of Mallorca. Their Madrid rivals Atletico are three points behind leaders Barca with a game in hand after they marched past Osasuna 3-1.

Bilbao went down 2-1 at home to Getafe dropping to 16th behind Real Sociedad who didn’t play on the weekend. Levante beat promoted Ciudad de Murcia 3-1, while Zaragoza beat Sevilla 2-1. Fellow promoted side Celta earned a 1-1 draw at home to Deportivo.

Valencia’s woeful start to the season continued as they were beaten 1-0 by Betis while Espanyol and Malaga ended goalless.

Juve win again

Serie A: Juventus fought for a close and controversial 1-0 victory over Catania to claim yet another three points in the Serie A.

Napoli clipped lowly Chievo 1-0. Meanwhile Antonio Di Natale scored a late penalty kick to make it 3-2 as Udinese came from behind to beat Roma who had earlier gone ahead through a two-minute Erik Lamela brace.

Inter meanwhile continued their recent run of form as they overcame struggling Bologna 3-1. Their Milan rivals earned a much-needed 1-0 win over Genoa, while Cagliari clipped Sampdoria by the same margin.

Parma beat Torino 3-1 while Fiorentina blanked Lazio 2-0. Both Siena versus Palermo and Pescara versus Atalanta ended goalless.

Bayern toppled, Dortmund win

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich saw their eight-game winning streak snapped by Leverkusen 2-1 as an 87th minute Jerome Boateng own-goal shocked fans at the Allianz Arena.

Meanwhile, Dortmund dragged the Bavarians back to within nine points as they blanked Freiburg 2-0 away. Previously second place Eintracht Frankfurt also lost 2-1 to Stuttgart to be replaced in second by Schalke who beat Nuremburg 1-0.

Wolfsburg raced to a slightly surprising 4-1 win at Dusseldorf as Bas Dost netted a brace. Hamburg continued their recent run of form with a 2-0 clean sheet at Augsburg. An Adam Szalai hat-trick gave Mainz a 3-0 win over Hoffenheim and Monchengladbach fought back from behind to overcome Hannover 3-2.

The weekend’s other game between Werder Bremen and Greuther Furth ended 1-1.
