Gary Card, Kerrica Hill set personal bests in Hungary
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Gary Card and Kerrica Hill set personal best times in the men’s 200m and 100m hurdles, respectively, on Tuesday at the Gyulai István Memorial meet.
Held at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, the event is a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event.
Despite failing on both occasions to get on the podium, they improved their previous bests and also moved up on the World Athletics rankings.
Also on Tuesday, six Jamaicans finished in podium positions including Tina Clayton and Brianna Lyston in the women’s 100m and Rajindra Campbell in the men’s shot put.
Card, who recently lowered the Jamaican Under-20 100m record, ran 20.28 seconds (0.2m/s) to place fifth in the men’s 200m, fourth best in the world for Under- 20 men and second best all time by a Jamaican, only behind Usain Bolt’s 19.93 seconds.
Card’s previous best was 20.50 seconds, which was 10th best by a Jamaican Under- 20 man.
Michael Campbell ran a season’s best 20.81 seconds for eighth place and Dominic Williams equalled his personal best 21.22 seconds for ninth place.
Hill, the two-time World Athletics Under- 20 Championships gold medallist, ran 12.50 seconds for fourth place, under her previous best 12.54 seconds, joint eighth best all times by a Jamaican.
World leader Masai Russell ran a meet record 12.33 seconds to extend her unbeaten run in the event all year and led a clean sweep of the podium places by Americans.
Rayniah Jones was second with 12.47 seconds and Alaysha Johnson third with 12.49 seconds.
Tina Clayton got off to a fast start but was second in the women’s 100m in 10.97 seconds (-0.3m/s), beaten by St Lucia’s Julien Alfred who ran a season’s best 10.87 seconds.
Lyston was third in 11.01 seconds ahead of Elaine Thompson-Herah 11.04 seconds and Jonielle Smith was sixth in 11.12 seconds.
Campbell had his best throw in the final round, 21.52m to move up two spots from fourth place, as Italy’s world leader Leonardo Fabbri won with 22.04m with Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi third with 21.48m.
Rushell Clayton finished second in the women’s 400m hurdles in 53.34 seconds and Shiann Salmon ran a season’s best 54.81 seconds for fourth place.
American Jasmine Jones clocked a season’s best 52.91 seconds to win with Kemi Adekoya of Bahrain was third in 54.18 seconds.
Ackeem Blake ran 10.04 seconds (-0.3m/s) to place third in the men’s 100m that was won by Emmanuel Eseme of the Cameroon with 9.99 seconds ahead of Ghana’s Abdul-Rasheed Saminu who clocked a season’s best 10.01 seconds.
Nishon Ebanks and South Africa’s Akani Simbine were timed in a dead heat 10.05 seconds for fourth with Rohan Watson seventh in 10.16 seconds.
Ackelia Smith finished third in the women’s long jump with 6.67m (0.1m/s) as American Monae Nichols won with 6.88m (-0.3m/s) with Claire Bryant second with 6.72m (0.2m/s).
Navasky Anderson ran a season’s best 1:43.62 for fourth in the men’s 800m that was won by Djamel Sedjati of Algeria in a season’s best 1:43.19, followed by Kenya’s Laban Kiporir Chepwony who ran a season’s best 1:43.54 and Spain’s David Barroso, who ran a lifetime best 1:43.60.
Lamara Distin was fourth in the women’s high jump, clearing 1.94m with Eleanor Patterson of Australia winning with a 2.00m jump, ahead of her compatriot Nicola Olyslagers who jumped 1.98m for second with Marija Vukovic equaling her Montenegrin national record 1.98m.
Wayne Pinnock was also fourth in the men’s long jump with a best of 8.08m (-0.5m/s), Nikaoli Williams was sixth with 7.88m (-0.9m/s) and Tajay Gayle ninth with 6.80m (-0.6m/s).
Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou won with 8.31m (-0.6m/s), ahead of Anvar Anvarov of Uzbekistan with 8.12m (0.2m/s) and Germany’s Simon Batz was third with a season’s best 8.12m (0.2m/s).
Rasheed Broadbell made his first appearance since June last year and was sixth in the 110m hurdles with 13.25 seconds (-0.4m/s), Tyler Mason was seventh with 13.38 seconds and Orlando Bennett eighth with 13.40 seconds.
It was a clean sweep of the podium for Americans with Ja’Kobe Tharp breaking the meet record with 12.85 seconds, Jamal Britt was second with 13.01 seconds and Cordell Tinch ran a season’s best 13.06 seconds.
Nickisha Pryce ran a season’s best 22.80 seconds (0.0m/s) for sixth place in the women’s 200m, her fourth time over the half lap race this season, while Krystal Sloley was seventh in 23.40 seconds.
