KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Umbrella Groups of Churches (JUGC) is calling on Jamaicans to pray, conserve water and support vulnerable communities as the country continues to face the effects of prolonged drought conditions.

The church body said the shortage of water is affecting households, communities, farmers, businesses and livelihoods across the island, with the most vulnerable experiencing the greatest impact.

In a statement issued on Friday, under the theme of prayer and collective responsibility, JUGC Chairman Bishop Dr Roy Notice urged the church and the wider society to respond with compassion and practical action during the challenging period.

The organisation outlined four key actions for Jamaicans: prayer, conservation and protection, care for those in need, and sharing resources with vulnerable groups.

JUGC encouraged citizens to pray for sustained rainfall to replenish water sources, restore agricultural lands and provide relief to affected communities. The group also urged households, churches, institutions and businesses to use water responsibly and avoid unnecessary waste.

The church organisation warned that dry conditions increase the risk of fires, urging Jamaicans to refrain from burning garbage, vegetation or land-clearing debris.

“Responsible action by each of us can help to protect lives, property and the environment,” the JUGC said.

The group also encouraged Jamaicans to look out for neighbours, particularly the elderly, persons with disabilities, struggling families and farmers whose livelihoods have been affected by the drought.

It called on the Government, businesses, churches and community organisations to work together to ensure that water reaches individuals and communities facing the greatest challenges.

JUGC identified three areas for national prayer: rainfall to replenish water supplies and refresh the land; support for farmers, families, communities and businesses affected by the drought; and wisdom and compassion among national leaders and organisations managing water resources and responding to those in need.

Referencing biblical passages from Zechariah 10:1 and James 5:17–18, Bishop Notice said the nation should combine faith with responsible action.

“Let us pray. Let us conserve and protect. Let us care. Let us share,” he said, adding, “May God have mercy upon our nation, send rain upon our land, and help us to act responsibly and care faithfully for one another during this difficult season.”
